If you think compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs give your energy budget a big bang for its buck, wait until you see what light emitting diode (LED) lighting can do. Except that the operative word there has always been “wait” because that’s all we’ve been doing: so far scientists have only been able to create ultra-efficient LEDs that shed light in certain colors. It’s possible to coax nice rich white light from this technology but only by sacrificing most of its energy savings.

We applaud the Organic Consumer Association’s (OCA) recent research efforts to educate consumers about the safety of personal care and home cleaning products. It is important for consumers to know that Seventh Generation’s dish liquid, which does contain a minute amount of the ethoxylate 1,4-dioxane, is deemed safe according to the FDA’s and our own strict guidelines.

As far as fuels are concerned, hydrogen is just about perfect. When combined with oxygen in a fuel cell, just three things come out: electricity, water, and heat. That’s it. No carbon dioxide. No particulates. No worries about sinking public health or rising sea levels. It’s the fuel you can bring home to meet your parents.

Fundamentally, there’s only one way that toxins in consumer products get noticed by consumers: Somebody begins making noise and keeps the drums going until the media picks up the beat and people everywhere start listening. Bisphenol-a in polycarbonate plastics. Phthalates in toys. Brominated fire retardants in home furnishings. Pick your poison. The pattern is always the same.

In what will be a welcome shock to our winter-weary systems up here in Vermont, Sunday marks the shift to Daylight Savings Time (DST), the day our clocks "spring forward" to offer an extra hour of what in these parts is much-appreciated sunshine. The idea, of course, is that among other benefits, the extra daylight will save energy by postponing the moment when we turn on our lights at night.
But does that really happen?
